Tully Tuesdays

Making it fun, moving, and musings

Inspired by a friend of mine to start writing more, I’ve done plenty of projects like this and have found writing to be a fun hobby particularly when the weather is cold and I can’t miss four 5 footers in a day.

I’ve started a new role after a 2-month unemployment stint. First off, the unemployment system in MA is a total mess. So much so that I took on the 2 months and had a new job before they were even able to process my application.

Starting a new job is always a fun experience, but beginning at RoadMap was a particularly exciting change because I was finally released from full-time remote work. I enjoyed the freedom of working remote (See GHIN app), but the monotonous routine of waking up, putting on a different Peter Millar hoodie and going to sit in the next room over was wearing me down. The peak of my day was deciding where I was going to lunch that day and that was equally as hazardous to my waistline as it was to my mental health.

Now I have colleagues I see every day, an office to myself, and a curiosity in the day to day I have lacked in my last couple of roles. I never realized how much I missed shooting the shit about last night’s games, politics, whatever else is going on. I still get my time to escape and find a sandwich or salad and I’m working on choosing the latter option.

My wife and I found a new place to live after 2.5 years downtown. I have loved the ability to walk over to the garden for a B’s game or the North End for a bite, but the cost of living in the city vs the amount of time spent has been eating at me for a while. What world are we in that 650 sq feet costs $3K a month? I get the inflation factors, but for cities looking to keep young people there, there just aren’t enough options for comfortable living, in particular if you are looking to save up to buy something. We found a location with over double the space, in a good location for less than we are paying now. Will we miss the city? Probably. Will I miss watching my checking account shrink month after month? No sir.

To end this first post I’ll leave you with a few learnings I’ve picked up since I’ve last written.

  1. Find what’s enjoyable about your day and dig the hell into it. For me it’s always been golf and sports. Keeping golf in my day to day keeps me excited, in the offseason that’s going to the simulator for practice and working out with the the Stack System and the GolfForever trainer. (highly recommend). For an ADD’er like myself, being able to tie my favorite thing into my workout has made a world of a difference. On the sports side, we’ve been able to build some models at work to project out goals for the Bruins, (3-1 so far on game totals so far nbd.)

  2. Rip the Band-Aid off. I’ve had a nightmare experience with my Jeep. I bought a new 2022 Wrangler 4xe in August of 2022, and the thing never worked. I got caught up in the tech and the excitement of a new car and completely ignored the thought that maybe a company that builds less than stellar vehicle was going to have some issues with a brand-new technology like a PHEV. Don’t buy one. The wave isn’t worth it.

  3. Keep going. I’ve spent most of my weekends this winter in ice rinks or basketball arenas calling High School and College games. I love doing it, and love having a little cash on the side that I don’t sweat putting into Draftkings or spending on golf gear. I feel like I’m finally getting back to form and into the mode where I am looking forward to prepping and broadcasting these games again. It’s a side hustle for now, but we’re gonna keep stacking tape and see where it goes.

  4. Coal by Dylan Gosset is the best song released since the start of last year.

See you next week.
