29 Years Old
Last year I wrote a list of the things I hadn’t accomplished by 28. Here’s a refresher
1st. Liking Coffee
Adults drink coffee. They live for it, they have memes, drink it black, can’t wait for the after lunch coffee, can’t function in the morning without it. I thought this would just come with time but in reality I don’t think I’m ever going to get there. I drink coffee, usually iced, and usually with some sort of cancer causing flavor added in for the taste. I like the caffeine rush and the digestive aid, but I’ve never woken up dreaming of my morning coffee. By 28 I should be there. I’m sure when I have kids I will develop a crippling reliance on the dirt water but I’m not there yet.
Winning a Super Bowl
I wrote in my 5th grade yearbook that when I grow up I would win a Super Bowl. Remind yourself at that point I was the best linebacker in the AJFL B team circuit. In the next two years I stopped growing and realized 5’8 180 pounds wasn’t the linebacker build meant for NFL Greatness. I was a lackluster quarterback in 8th grade and the Freshman football team outside of my QB Sneak prowess that led to my only offensive touchdowns of my life. The dream probably fizzled around then.
My next closest thing would be the Cowboys winning a Super Bowl. Their last Super Bowl was January 28, 1996. Just under 4 months before I was born. That’s a joke. I know it’s fun to laugh and make fun of the Cowboys but that’s legitimately the biggest failure of all time. Jerry Jones should be ashamed. The Rangers, Mavericks, and the Stars should be laughing their asses off. Its really not that hard to win a championship. My top sports take that I truly believe in is that if an owner goes 20 years without winning a title they should have to sell their team. There are only so many Pro teams to own and there are plenty of billionaires who would love to own a team. If you are a team like the Cowboys, Lions, Bears, R-Words, Jets, 49ers, you should be able to at least get a new owner to shock up your organization every 20 or 25 years. If any of these owners were a coach or a quarterback they would be out of town in 5 years max. Pro Sports should be about winning and only winning, particularly in the NFL where you only need to win 3 games, sometimes 2 to reach the Super Bowl, you have to be able to do that ONE TIME in 30 years.
You can buy a Championship. The Rams did. The 49ers have gotten damn close. The Patriots did by adding veterans to fill their holes during their incredible run.
I wrote an article in the Eagle Tribune a few years back about my Cowboys fandom, and one of my main end thoughts was that all of my friends kids are going to be me. Growing up hearing how great the Patriots used to be and convincing themselves that one year will be the year. Its a cruel existence that I only wish for slightly for my friends that grew up at a parade every year.
And sure I’ve had some wins. OSU in 14 The Bruins in 2011, the Red Sox in 04, 07, 13, and 18. The Celtics this year and in 2008. (Yes the Celtics are beating the Mavericks). But if you’re offering me the trade. I’d give you all of them for a Super Bowl. Without thinking. I’d trade all of those wins, and the OSU one would be hard to give up, but with their dominance over their little brother up north (10 out of last 13 meetings, 11 if you count the FORFEIT in 2020), I can live with it, OSU is gonna win once every decade. I could wait until 2025 for that one.
Being able to sing/play guitar
This is a half win. Thanks to Covid, I can finally play the guitar. Not going to wow anybody with my skills, but if there’s enough beer at the campfire I can get through some songs without pissing everyone off. That’s a win. It was something I always wanted to do, and in High School I tried, but the teacher quit because I was the only student paying every week, not great business on his end but I only had a month or two of lessons. When I picked it up again in 2019 I was starting from scratch and now in 2024 I can pick up a stray guitar and play a few songs.
The singing has a long way to go evidence provided below (thanks Dunney). I thought singing would be easy but my voice is basically just my broadcasting voice in a whisper. I tried the app but I don’t understand Music Keys and don’t think I want to sing the ABC’s until I have some fake idea of how to sing. I want to sing Adele, Chris Stapleton, Zach Bryan, and I think I’m just gonna keep skewering those songs until I have enough kids and grandkids that don’t know any better.
There’s a long list of things I’ve yet to accomplish but there are things I have to this point. I’ve gotten married and moved into a home that we will eventually bring our family into. I’ve called 100s of games and seen some of the best stadiums and environments college football has to offer, I’ve sat on the radio in the Dallas Cowboys broadcast booth and met dozens of incredible people that I’ve looked up to for a long time. I finally figured out how to hit a golf ball decently far and make putts with money on the line. I have great friends who are there whenever I need them. I have a great job that I enjoy after years of working at startups that had zero direction or potential. God willing, I have plenty of time to figure the rest out, and if I ever get around to liking coffee, those tasks might get easier as well, but what’s the point of getting old if you still feel like a kid.
This year I feel pretty good about where I’m at working down this list
I’ve certainly taking a liking to Coffee. I look forward to my cup in the morning with my For Wellness mixed in there. I had a stretch where I was hitting 3 or 4 a day. I love the Stella Blue blends from Big Cat and like that they send their profits to an animal Shelter. At the time I wrote that blog I had no idea I’d be sitting here as the Father of a 3 month old who makes my day every time I look at her. That’s enough of an energy boost for me but the Coffee Helps. Also have I mentioned what a superhero and how amazing my wife is recently? A Wife, a Mimi, and a Nana encouraging me to remember to go play golf on the weekends? How good do I have it?
Step Two was always out of my control, but I did Call the Buckeyes Championship and reminded myself last year to put my Ohio State National Championship Future down for my first 4 figure payout! I said once a decade and 10 years after the last they got it done. And George Pickens is a Cowboy, Schotty is the man, and we might have some running backs to help out the QB and stud-stacked Defense. Could be the year.
Step Three was put to the test this weekend, as I’ll cover below, I took the stage this weekend at my buddies wedding and while I didn’t book any follow up shows I think I held my own out there. I gave up on the electric dream and got a nice Martin that was perfect for the plugged in set up I had up at the lake. When I started playing in 2020, I always thought that one day I’d hope to be good enough to play for my kids and sing along. I don’t know if I’m quite there yet but nothing makes me tear up faster than when I’m playing to Gracie and she’s got a big ol smile on her facing. It’s just the absolute best thing in the world right now
I’m so grateful for the people in my life, from my wife, daughter, parents, siblings, in-laws, the greatest group of friends, extended family, the community at ACC, my colleagues at work, and of course this little corner of the internet I have curated. So much has happened in the last year and I’ve had so much support along the way.
Some Thoughts on the Weekend
I had a great time at another wedding, this time up north in New Hampshire for my buddy Gregg and his beautiful bride Lexi.
The Wedding was fantastic at a beautiful mountain venue with great details, food, and friends. I spent a lot of time growing up with Gregg’s family and it was a real treat to get to spend time with him, his parents, and sisters over the weekend to catch up and tell old stories.
The Bride and Groom stroked my ego by asking me to kick things off with a speech at the rehearsal dinner as well as play guitar for the crowds throughout the weekend, which was a ton of a fun and really made for a great time. I think I played Chicken Fried a total of 8 times in 4 days.
My on my perch for the weekend
I also created a new Groomsmen game called “The Kiss”. The Premise of the Kiss is a chain of kisses on the wedding day, from one Groomsmen to the next ending with the Groom. It’s ridiculous, niche, and probably odd from the outside, but we thought it was funny as fuck and will be running it back at our next group wedding. The first Kiss was laid at 9:35 am and the final Kiss was delivered a little after 11pm. 10/10 would recommend, no kisses on the lips is the only rule. If you go to sleep with the Kiss and do not pass it up the chain you owe the Bride and Groom $1000.
The Bride had a pretty serious leg injury a little over a month ago, and still put in the time and effort to make sure she got her first dance with her new Husband and Father, it was a really beautiful moment and really hit me in my feels. Between their first dance and Gregg’s dance with his Mom, who was a second mother to me growing up, I’m hoping they are able to salvage at least one or two pictures where I wasn’t crying my eyes out.
58 High Noons later, we capped off the weekend with a bonfire and some cigars, untangled any drama from the past 3 days, and hit the road in the morning. The 2 hour drive home through the New Hampshire Mountains, slightly hungover, SunRoof down, Sad Cowboy Music playing was euphoric, and it was the first time in the last 2 years I thought to myself that I wished I still had that Jeep. What a beautiful disaster of a Car.
I really am lucky to have such a great group of friends, and the story of our friend group starts with Gregg and I looking at each other and deciding it was time to be best friends right before High School, we have grown our crew from 2 to 11, and there are more additions to come. If I got nothing out of the Prep other than our group of friends, I’d still donate and support and send my sons there.
And Finally, after a few weeks of some really bad golf. I’m Back. 73 yesterday with a double on 2 (which is an easy hole I should’ve birdied or parred from where my tee shot was). Had some new found #DadStrength and drove the 4th hole for the first time and got onto the 560 yard par 5 14th hole for the first time. Two two putt birdies later and I was set up. Was hoping to go out and shoot an inspiring 78 and keep my handicap in place for the FourBall this weekend but taking family out of the equation, I’ll take a good day of golf over any other type of day.
I finished that Pelz Putting Bible and really feel confident and excited when I take the putter back. Also started playing with the Tour Tempo app from the Sherman video I shared last week, tick, tick, tick. I might be dialed. I know this is more of an outlier this year than in years past but I am juiced and want to make the good ones count.
Best Game I watched this week
Didn’t get a lot of sports watching done last week, but my buddy Fred and I found ourselves glued to the TV Friday night. We had just finished the ECF game and were looking for something watch/bet on. We stumbled on an instant classic in the NCAA Softball Super Regionals
I have long been a fan of college softball. My sister was a Stud (3x) All-Conference Catcher in high school so I watched a ton of her games and a lot of college softball with her. In College one of my main beats for B1G Network was OSU Softball. I did dozens of games and was prominently featured in their pre game hype videos with some of my home run calls. The games are quick, and at the top level they are very exciting. This was a 10 inning barn burner with Texas on the ropes down 0-1 in the 3 game series. The Horns bullpen was stingy and kept Clemson from winning with runners in scoring positions throughout extra innings. We had a blast and cashed out with Texas winning our Moneyline bets.

Podcast Episode of the Week
It’s no secret I’m a big Barstool guy, and even though he’s a Michigan Man, I’m a big fan of Dave. This was a great look into his world and how he sees business, friends, employees, while he looks back on his journey with Barstool. He is a lot of things, and one of them is a great Entrepeneur who never quit, and led with loyalty. I’d never watched Club Shay Shay before but I liked how Shannon asked him questions and dug deeper when he was shocked by the answers, he definitely didn’t know a lot about Portnoy before they sat down, but he was eager to learn and engage.
Best Show I’ve Watched this Week
If you’ve read my columns for the last year and a half you know I love Survivor, I haven’t had a lot of takes on here because of spoilers for my friends that watch after the season. But now that the finale is over I got some takes. Scroll if you don’t want the spoilers.
Joe was the best competitor on the show but really dropped the ball at the end if his goal was to win. I think a common mistake Survivor players, particularly the challenge winners make is they focus on the challenges as their only way to safety. Joe never looked for an idol, used Eva’s idols, or made a move that got him further in the game. He just kept winning challenges, which is great, but you have to use immunity as your chance to make a big move in the game. He had to have known taking Eva to the end was going to hurt him, and maybe he is that good of a guy that he wanted her there regardless. His only chance to win at the end was to make fire and take out Eva. Kamilla and Kyle knew this was the only path for either of them, and Kyle lucked out with Eva being able to make the fire faster. He won, but probably would’ve won unanimously had he been the one to make fire. Carrying Joe to the final was enough to handicap Joes’ game and the fact his biggest move was planted by Kyle and Kamilla really ended his chances. He should’ve owned taking David out, and he should’ve taken Kyle or Kamilla when he took out Shauhin, who thinks he was a contender in this game, which he really wasn’t. It was Joe and Kyle the whole way, and Kyle rode the wave correctly to secure the title of Sole Survivor.
